I snagged those free birds as soon as I read the email. Also picked up Loops de la Creme's Songbird Virtuouso when it was half-off last month. Haven't had a chance to play with it much yet, but I love this kind of thing. I have some field recordings I've made of grackles and cicadas and need to get more proactive about making more like those.
One day last summer when the cicadas were unreasonably loud outside the back door, I set up a pair of mics sort of mid/side and recorded them for awhile. Got some good stuff but problem was all the background noise, traffic and ambience non cicada-induced. You can't find one up-close out there. They shut up if you do get close anyway. I wonder how he worked around that.
It is the cacophony of them all together that is appealing to me, just like with grackles. A flock of grackles sounds straight from hell. Now close mic'ed woodpecker, we're on. I don't have a sanken but I know that I don't need to spend a few hundo on a high quality recording of an insect that badly.
